In the Neighborhood - October 2007
writes, "Support Longmont – Support the Lodger’s Tax

Longmont needs a lodger’s tax to maximize our ability to attract visitors to our community. Why visitors? It’s simple – because visitors will spend money in our community. Every industry, organization and businessperson in Longmont will benefit from new dollars being invested in the community. Visitors will go to arts and cultural places, festivals, restaurants, shops, etc. Sales taxes from their purchases support the community as a whole through a healthier City general fund.

"
A lodger’s tax is one of the most common tools used by communities to support the quality of life that is important their residents. Currently, over 50 communities in Colorado have some type of lodger’s tax in place.

The proposed Longmont lodger’s tax is two percent (2%), one of the lowest in the state. Paid only by those who rent hotel, motel or bed and breakfast rooms for the night, the monies are collected by the City. All lodging services provided to religious and charitable organizations in the conduct of their regular religious or charitable functions and all lodging services provided to an individual for a period of at least thirty days are exempt from the lodger’s tax.

Lodger’s tax revenue will be use to promote tourism and attract more conventions and conferences to Longmont. A dedicated fund and a professional organization committed to marketing Longmont 24 hours a day will result in more investment in the community.

For every dollar spent, visitors spend an average of $292 (source: Longwood Study, 2004).

The Longmont Council for the Arts, the Longmont City Council, the Longmont Area Economic Council, the Longmont Downtown Development Authority and the Longmont Area Chamber of Commerce endorse and are supporting the lodger’s tax. For every dollar donated to assist with the campaign, the Chamber will match it up to a maximum of $6,000. Make your donation today – send your contribution to Tourism Works for Longmont – Craig Chaney, Treasurer, 900 South Main Street Suite 200, Longmont, CO 80501.

If you would like to distribute informational brochures in your place of business, please stop by the Chamber to pick them up. Additional information concerning the lodger’s tax is available at www.longmont.org, www.longmontchamber.org and www.visitlongmont.org.
