Longmont's original Strawberry Festival was held in June 1871 to celebrate the opening of Library Hall donated to the colony town by benefactress Elizabeth Thompson of New York. In 1970 the St. Vrain Historical Society chose to commemorate this early community celebration in the name of its spring antique show. In the last 35 years the event has become a modern community tradition and more than 5,000 people attend the antique show to browse, buy and enjoy the fresh strawberries.
